Welcome back everybody. You’re in for a treat as we go head to head with two of the biggest hair care brands yet. Yes we have lined up two of the best selling matte hair styling products from two of the most popular brands to see which one is better. Today we will be testing the TIGI bed head Matte Separation VS Hairbond Distorter.

TIGI
TIGI products were oringinally founded by award-winning hairdresser, Anthony Mascolo. Since manufacturing millions of hairdressing products for hairdressers, Anthony then started designing products for men. This is when the Bed Head For Men range was born. Within the Bed Head For Men collection, there are a number of male grooming products of which Matte Separation is one of the better selling hair styling products. Today this corporate brand has dominated the cheaper side of the market for a number of years now. With thousands of sellers at their fingertips like supermarkets, discount shops, as well as hair salons, the whole Bed Head brand was designed to be a low cost, high volume mass-market business.
“WHEN WE COULDN’T FIND THE PRODUCTS WE WANTED, WE MADE THEM OURSELVES.”
“TIGI founder, award-winning, iconic hairdresser, Anthony Mascolo has created a unique culture: a family-orientated hub of creatives who share his ethos of pushing the boundaries and technical know-how to benefit themselves and other professional hairdressers. It’s about sharing everything through TIGI education, exciting the audience through shows and artistic imagery. TIGI understand and interpret fashion to create hairstyles hairdressers will want to recreate and their clients will love to wear, using TIGI products to enhance the cut, colour, style and finish.”

Hairbond United Kingdom
Like TIGI, Hairbond United Kingdom was also originally founded by professional hairdresser and barber Scott Michaels.
Unlike TIGI, Scott stated his focus was to provide the best quality hair styling products Britain could manufacture, whatever the cost. Since then Hairbond products have been carefully crafted to be loved by the masses.
With the brand like Hairbond representing at the premium end of the scale, the male grooming industry has certainly evolved with more of us realising price isn’t everything if there’s a level of quality you don’t mind paying for. This is what has made Hairbond so popular today.
Hairbond United Kingdom has been on a growing trend with thousands of celebrity endorsements over the years. Due to the amount of Premier League and International footballers who use it, Hairbond United Kingdom are known as the “Premier League Of Hair Styling”. Here’s what the brand say:

OK now we’re ready to get stuck into the marking, each category will be ranked a score out of 5, first up is the Hairbond Distorter Professional Hair Clay!

Hairbond United Kingdom Distorter Professional Hair Clay

Packaging:
Talk about separate yourself from the competition. Hairbond smashed it in the packaging department. Elegant. Classy. 5/5
Application:
The application was great. Straight forward. No tugging and pulling. Applied smoothly. Full marks 5/5
Finish:
Exceptional. True matte. No shine. Natural. Really brings out the texture in my freshly cut style. 5/5

Consistency:
Super smooth and creamy 5/5
Hold:
Great hold. It says 3/5 on their hold scale. I would say this is about right. It really stays in place but the professional effect is more important than the hold with this product. If you’re looking for a cemented look or style where nothing will move all day, this is not the product for you. A little movement will actually contribute to the perfect Distorter look. 5/5
Overall:
5/5
What They Say
“An elite, matte styling product that creates texture with a supple finish Hairbond Distorter Professional Hair Clay is an offers a flexible hold factor of 3 out of 5. Providing professional results on all hair types Distorter is particularly suited to thick, straight hair.
Designed in the UK as an alternative to sub-standard high street styling products, Hairbond Distorter Professional Hair Clay is not just a commodity but a lifestyle essential, promising to deliver quality by maintaining the highest possible standards. Hairbond use top of the range product formulations and ingredients to create an authentic British solution for the ultimate men’s styling results.”
Let’s see how the Distorter compares to the TIGI bed head Matte Separation.

TIGI Bed Head Matte Separation

Packaging:
Cheap. Perhaps alluminium. What I was expecting for the money. I do however quite like the TIGI branding. One of the weakest for TIGI when it comes to packaging. 1/5
Application:
As a Matte Separation product, my hopes were high. Frustratingly this gunky cream gives you more of a low shine finish. 2/5
Finish:
A bit sticky. Was expecting more clay-like properties from this product. As in, no shine and lots of created texture. Unfortunately, the Matte Separation clumped together where I had applied the product and ironically, it was hard to separate. 2/5
Consistency:
I expected the Matte Separation to be easy to break down. But instead, it’s a lot wetter than anticipated, more like a creamy putty. Whilst you spread it through your hands it just becomes tackier and sticky. 2/5
Hold:
Due to the fact the stickiness levels are so high this stuff actually holds. Despite the finish and the texture I have to award the hold. 3/5
Overall:
2/5. Disappointed.
What They Say
“Style hair with texture and definition with the Bed Head for Men Matte Separation Hair Wax. This strong hold hair wax adds hold, texture, separation and definition to styled hair. The hair wax has a natural matte finish and resists humidity for long-lasting hair styling. The Matte Separation Hair Wax is the most popular Bed Head for Men product globally.
Ideal for styling short to medium hair. Apply the hair wax to towel-dried or dry hair, then style and create extra detail with fingers. Top tip: the drier your hair, the more matte the finish and the wetter the hair, the softer the results.
Formulated with Beeswax for hair amazing texture and hold, Cera Carnauba, a medium-weight wax that gives a long-lasting workable hold and Glycerine that moisturises, conditions and nourishes the hair.
The hair wax is 85 g and comes with Fresh Green Aromatic fragrance.
Apply to damp or dry hair for texture and hold”

And the winner is..

So the Hairbond Distorter Professional Hair Clay wins this battle for best matte hair product destroying the TIGI Bed Head Matte Separation.
You really can’t compare an old Ford Fiesta to a Rolls Royce, but I was really disappointed in some of the lack of quality in the TIGI product.
I think it’s fair to say whilst Hairbond products sit at the other end of the market, it’s a brand which only appeals to those who really value the common quality differences.
Join us soon for another battle of the hair brands.
